What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin (BTC) is the first and best-known cryptocurrency, running on a decentralized network since 2009 and moving without banks or intermediaries. Its supply is capped at 21 million coins for good, which is one reason it draws so much attention.
The network is secured by miners, and about every four years (every 210,000 blocks) the miners’ reward is cut in half; the most recent halving was in April 2024. A halving slows the creation of new bitcoin, but it does not promise any future price.
What moves the Bitcoin price?
The Bitcoin price is formed by buying and selling in the market, and a few broad factors influence it. These are not predictions; they only explain why the number on the card changes:
- Supply and demand: more buyers than sellers pushes the price up, and the reverse pushes it down.
- Global economic news: interest rates, inflation and the general mood in financial markets change how much risk investors take.
- Rules and regulation: news about crypto from large countries can move the whole market.
- Liquidity and trading volume: in quiet hours a single large order moves the price further.
How is the Bitcoin price on this page calculated?
The card above shows the Bitcoin (BTC) price in US dollars, with the 24-hour change and the time of the last update. Switch the currency in the card to see it in euros, UAE dirhams or Turkish lira: the value is the US dollar price multiplied by the market rate of that currency per US dollar. If your currency moves against the dollar, the local price of Bitcoin moves even when its dollar price stands still.
The 24-hour change compares the current price with the price at this same moment yesterday. It describes the recent past and says nothing about tomorrow.
The price on this page is for display and reference only, not a trade price. When you pay or convert in Waletifi, the exact amount comes from a signed quote with an expiry that you see before you confirm. If the price hasn’t updated for a few minutes, you see a warning next to it.
Hold, receive and send Bitcoin in Waletifi
Your Bitcoin addresses in Waletifi start with bc1q (native SegWit). The network fee depends on how busy Bitcoin is, and it is shown on the review screen, with the total in your own currency, before you confirm.
To get Bitcoin, you can deposit it from an exchange or another wallet to your own address and, where conversion is available for it, convert from another asset; the minimum you receive and every fee are shown before you confirm. Availability depends on the pair and your country.
Keys are created and kept only on your phone, and we can’t touch your funds. Write your 24-word recovery phrase on paper and keep it somewhere safe.
Know the risks
Crypto prices can move a lot in a single day, and Bitcoin is no exception. This page is not advice to buy or sell and promises no returns; only put in money you can afford to see go down.
