What is BNB, and what is BNB Smart Chain (BEP20)?
BNB is the coin that pays the fees on BNB Smart Chain, one of the most used networks for USDT and other tokens. Because its addresses look exactly like Ethereum’s, it is also where many wrong-network mistakes happen. Here is how it works and what to watch.
BNB: the coin that pays for the network
BNB is the native coin of BNB Smart Chain. Every transaction on that network, from a simple transfer to a smart-contract call, pays its fee, called gas, in BNB. Tokens that live on the same network, such as USDT (BEP20), still need a little BNB to move.
BNB’s supply is designed to shrink over time: part of it is burned on a schedule, and part of every fee is burned too.
What BNB Smart Chain and BEP20 mean
BNB Smart Chain is a blockchain compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Smart contracts and tools built for Ethereum can run on it, and its blocks follow each other within seconds, so fees are usually low.
BEP20 is the token standard on BNB Smart Chain, the equivalent of ERC20 on Ethereum. When an exchange offers USDT on “BEP20” or “BSC”, it means USDT on BNB Smart Chain.
BNB Smart Chain vs Ethereum
The two networks look alike, which is exactly why mixing them up is easy:
| BNB Smart Chain | Ethereum | |
|---|---|---|
| Fee (gas) coin | BNB | ETH |
| Token standard | BEP20 | ERC20 |
| Address format | 0x… (same format) | 0x… (same format) |
| Network ID (chain ID) | 56 | 1 |
| Typical fees | Usually low | Usually higher |
The classic mistake: same address, different network
Your 0x address is the same on BNB Smart Chain and on Ethereum, but the balances are completely separate. USDT sent on BNB Smart Chain does not show up on Ethereum, and the reverse is also true.
If you send to your own self-custody wallet on the wrong network, the funds are usually still yours: switch the network in the wallet to see them. If you send to an exchange on a network it does not support for that coin, recovery depends on the exchange, if it is possible at all.
Keeping some BNB for fees
- Hold a small amount of BNB on BNB Smart Chain before sending any BEP20 token.
- Check that the receiver supports BNB Smart Chain for that exact token.
- Choose the network on the exchange first, then copy the address.
- For a first transfer to a new address, send a small test amount.
BNB in Waletifi
In Waletifi you hold BNB and BEP20 tokens on BNB Smart Chain. The network is shown on every receive address and on the review screen, and the fee in BNB is shown in your own currency before you confirm. Where it is available in your country, you can also convert to BNB inside the app.
Your keys are created and kept only on your phone, and we can’t move your funds.
