Crypto basics

What is cryptocurrency?

DefinitionCryptocurrency is digital money that lives on a blockchain instead of in a bank account. Ownership is proven with cryptographic keys, so whoever holds the private key can spend the coins without asking a bank or company for permission.

How cryptocurrency works

Cryptocurrency works through a public ledger and a pair of keys. The blockchain records every balance and transfer, your public address is where you receive funds, and your private key signs each payment to prove it came from you.

Nobody can spend your coins without that signature, and once a transaction is confirmed it cannot be reversed. That is what makes crypto both powerful and unforgiving: there is no chargeback and no password reset.

Main types of cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrencies fall into a few broad groups, and the difference matters when you send or hold them:

  • Native coins such as Bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), Toncoin (TON) and TRX, which pay the fees on their own blockchains
  • Tokens created by smart contracts on top of a blockchain, such as USDT on Tron or on TON
  • Stablecoins, tokens designed to track a currency such as the US dollar
  • Tokenized assets, such as gold tokens backed by physical gold

Risks to understand before you buy

The main risk of cryptocurrency is price volatility: most coins can rise or fall sharply in a single day, so only use money you can afford to keep in crypto. Stablecoins move far less, but they depend on their issuer’s reserves.

Other risks are practical. Payments sent to the wrong address or network are usually lost, scammers pose as support staff or investment advisers, and anyone who sees your recovery phrase can empty your wallet.

Where to keep cryptocurrency

You can keep crypto with a company, such as an exchange account, or in a self-custody wallet where you hold the keys. With a company, you trust it to stay solvent and let you withdraw; with self-custody, you take responsibility for your recovery phrase.

Waletifi is a self-custody wallet: your keys stay on your phone, and every balance is shown in your local currency with the exact crypto amount beside it.

Questions and answers

Is cryptocurrency real money?

Cryptocurrency is a digital asset that can be sent, received and exchanged for local currency, but in most countries it is not official legal tender. Its legal status and tax treatment depend on where you live.

Who controls cryptocurrency?

No single company controls a public cryptocurrency like Bitcoin; its network of nodes enforces the rules. Some tokens, including most stablecoins, do have an issuer that manages the supply and can freeze tokens.

Do I need a bank account to own crypto?

No. Anyone can create a self-custody wallet and receive crypto at its address. You only need a bank account when you buy or sell crypto for local currency.
