What is TRC20?
DefinitionTRC20 is the technical standard for tokens on the Tron blockchain, and “USDT TRC20” means Tether on Tron. TRC20 tokens live at Tron addresses that start with T, and their network fees are paid with TRX or with Tron’s energy and bandwidth.
How TRC20 works
TRC20 defines a common set of functions, such as checking a balance and transferring tokens, that every token on Tron follows. It closely mirrors the ERC20 standard on Ethereum, which is why wallets and exchanges can support many TRC20 tokens the same way.
Each TRC20 token is a smart contract with its own contract address. That address, not the name or logo, is what makes a token genuine, because anyone can create a token called USDT.
Fees: TRX, energy and bandwidth
Tron doesn’t charge gas the way Ethereum does. Every transaction consumes bandwidth, and smart-contract calls such as a USDT transfer also consume energy. You can get these resources by staking TRX, and every account receives a small free bandwidth allowance each day; when you don’t have enough, the network burns TRX from your balance instead.
In practice, you need some TRX or energy in the same wallet to send USDT TRC20. A transfer usually costs more when the recipient’s address has never held that token before.
TRC20 vs other USDT networks
USDT exists on several blockchains, and the sender and receiver must use the same one. The address itself is a good clue:
- TRC20 (Tron): addresses start with T, fees in TRX or energy
- BEP20 (BNB Smart Chain): 0x addresses, fees in BNB
- ERC20 (Ethereum): 0x addresses, fees in ETH
- TON: addresses usually start with UQ or EQ, fees in TON
USDT TRC20 in Waletifi
Waletifi supports USDT on Tron alongside TON, BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum and other networks. The network is shown on the receive address and on the review screen, the fee is shown before you confirm, and the app warns you if the TRX or energy needed to send is missing.
