What is a cold wallet?
DefinitionA cold wallet is a crypto wallet whose private keys are created and kept on a device that never connects to the internet, such as a hardware wallet. Transactions are signed offline, so malware on your computer or phone cannot reach the keys.
How a cold wallet signs transactions
A cold wallet signs transactions offline, and only the signed result goes online. You prepare the transfer in an internet-connected app, the offline device shows the details, you approve on the device itself, and the signed transaction is passed back by cable, Bluetooth or QR code to be broadcast.
The private key never leaves the cold device, and that is what protects it. The online app only ever sees addresses and signed transactions.
Types of cold storage
Cold storage comes in a few forms, from dedicated devices to plain paper:
- Hardware wallets: small dedicated devices with their own screen and buttons
- Air-gapped phones or computers that are never connected to any network
- Paper wallets: a key printed on paper, now considered risky and hard to use safely
Risks and mistakes to avoid
Cold storage removes online attacks, but not every risk:
- Buy a hardware device only from its maker’s official store, and never use one that arrives with a recovery phrase already filled in.
- Back up the recovery phrase on paper or metal; if the device breaks, the phrase is the only way back.
- Always check the address on the device’s own screen before approving.
- Never type a cold wallet’s recovery phrase into a phone, computer or website; doing so turns it into a hot wallet.
Cold wallets and Waletifi
Waletifi is a hot wallet, not a cold wallet: it runs on an online phone, with keys encrypted by the Android Keystore. A common setup is to keep long-term savings in cold storage and use a mobile wallet like Waletifi for everyday sending, receiving and payments.
